“Hygeia” is a fully equipped guesthouse with the aim to host families (with either refugee/migrant profile or Greek families) accompanying their hospitalized children in Athens. Besides accommodation, the beneficiaries are offered transportation, financial assistance, personal hygiene items and other non-food items as well as psychosocial support and educational and recreational activities for children. The staff consists of a coordinator, social worker, psychologist, educator, interpreters and caregivers.
Psychological support for beneficiaries
The minor patient, siblings, and parents are supported by a psychologist so s to cope with the stressful situation, that is, the process of hospitalization, illness and its consequences. ZEUXIS provides psychological support through sessions according to a specific weekly program and each beneficiaries' needs. The psychological sessions also aims to empower parents to deal with any possible long-term difficulties arising from the illness and treatment to better respond to their parental role in the long run.
Decrease the burden of caregiving
Several factors can further complicate access to health care, such as low literacy/illiteracy, language barriers, different cultural background, bureaucratic procedures, fears regarding health care. A social worker supports parents/guardians in a language that they understand, facilitates communication with hospital health workers, helps them deal with bureaucratic issues and connect them with various support resources within and beyond the health system. To achieve this, ZEUXIS also employs caregivers/facilitators and interpreters.
